Step 5: Booting Into the MATE Desktop in Arch Linux $ sudo systemctl enable lightdmįinally, reboot your ArchLinux system. $ sudo pacman -S lightdm-gtk-greeterĮnable the lightDM service to start on boot.

Next, let’s install greeter, a utility that provides a GUI login screen. The LightDM display manager handles the graphical login for a user in the system with login credentials. Step 4: Install LightDM Display Manager in Arch Linux $ sudo pacman -S mate mate-extraĪs seen earlier, when prompted, simply hit ENTER to install all the packages. This is going to take some time, and it would be a good time to unwind with a cup fo coffee. With Xorg installed, we can then proceed to install the MATE desktop environment. Step 3: Installing MATE Desktop Environment in Arch Linux When prompted, simply hit the ENTER button to install all the packages. To install Xorg on Arch Linux, run the command. There's a potential you may also have a problem with the format which is just underneath language, so try fixing that too.Xorg is a popular X windows system or display system that was designed for Unix / Linux systems to provide a graphical environment. I believe I hadn't completed a step properly which was setting my language incorrectly (I don't know how I messed that up :) ) but using the desktop environment, I just went into the settings and went to region & language and changed my language to English, that then fixed my problem and was able to boot the terminal. I also just realised that you can't boot the terminal. (I only just installed Arch Linux yesterday so if I'm wrong, please do forgive me :P.) This would mean you still have Gnome running but you're just interacting with just command lines only and no desktop environment (you can always re-enable it by just swapping disable for enable and then reboot again). That did work for me, and if not, try also stopping the process as well systemctl stop gdm.serviceĪnd reboot again. What I did was disable the display manager in the terminal by (assuming it is correct you're using Gnome): systemctl disable gdm.service
